The Universidad Tecnológica de Cancún (UT Cancún) initiated a new high school program in Quintana Roo, marking the first time a public university in the state has offered upper secondary education. This program, the Bachillerato Nacional de las Universidades del Subsistema Tecnológico (BNUST), employs a mixed modality of in-person and virtual learning to accommodate its inaugural cohort of 30 students. This launch coincided with the entry of 1,350 new students into the university’s undergraduate and engineering programs. This initiative is part of the broader Margarita Maza National Baccalaureate program, a federal strategy promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum to expand upper secondary education coverage across Mexico. The expansion includes significant infrastructure investments in states like Hidalgo, where eight campuses were activated with an investment exceeding 189 million pesos to serve various municipalities. In Baja California Sur, the program has also begun operations with locations in La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, and San José del Cabo. This branch offers a two-year curriculum—shorter than the standard three-year program—utilizing a semi-presential semi-presidential modality for students up to 22 years of age. The curriculum integrates academic subjects with sports and artistic activities, supported by young professional advisors who receive financial assistance to guide students.
