Portuguese municipalities and the Public Security Police (PSP) are expanding and renewing video surveillance systems to enhance public security and crime prevention. In Viseu, a cooperation protocol was established to install 54 security cameras across the Historic Center, Jugueiros, Rossio, and Rua João Mendes. This 1.4 million euro project, funded by the Municipality of Viseu, will be managed operationally by the PSP. In Lisbon, the government has authorized a three-year renewal of the existing 27-camera surveillance system in the Bairro Alto district to combat crime in the busy area. This renewal follows broader municipal proposals, including a 12 million euro investment plan to install 500 additional cameras in districts such as Parque das Nações, Almirante Reis, and Avenida da Liberdade. During a Lisbon Municipal Assembly meeting, Mayor Carlos Moedas highlighted growing security concerns, reporting a rise in crime alongside a decrease in police presence. He noted that while Lisbon’s population has increased by 109,000 since 2010, the PSP force has decreased by approximately 2,000 officers.
