An explosion near the northern Israeli border during a school hiking trip has resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to approximately 24 people. The victims, including students and teachers from ORT Ma’alot Yeshiva High School, were involved in an annual trip near the community of Neot Mordechai, located in the Ramim Ridge area between Kibbutz Manara and Kibbutz Yiftach. Magen David Adom paramedics treated several casualties, with eight individuals reported to be in serious or moderate condition. Victims were evacuated via ambulances and helicopters to hospitals in Nahariya, Nahariya and Haifa, including Ziv, Rambam, and Galilee Medical Centers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited injured students at Rambam Hospital in Haifa following the incident. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) report that the blast was likely caused by an unexploded Hezbollah cluster munition remaining from previous hostilities. Preliminary investigations suggest a student may have picked up the object and placed it in a bag, or attempted to handle or unscrew it, before it detonated. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Education Minister Yoav Kisch visited the injured at Rambam Hospital in Haifa following the incident. Israeli police and bomb disposal experts have secured the site for forensic examination. Authorities are currently considering a suspension of school trips in the region until the area is cleared of unexploded ordnance.
