Expreso newspaper transition to digital in Ecuador
Overview
The Ecuadorian newspaper Expreso has ceased its print edition after 53 years of circulation, transitioning exclusively to digital platforms. The decision was announced by its publisher, Gráficos Nacionales S.A. (Granasa), following significant financial difficulties.
Galo Martínez Leisker, executive president of Granasa, attributed the closure to a loss of approximately 70% of advertising revenue. He alleged that the administration of President Daniel Noboa has exerted tax, administrative, and economic pressure on companies, claiming they were threatened with investigations from the tax service or anti-money laundering units if they advertised in the newspaper.
Media organizations, including the Inter American Press Association (SIP), have raised concerns regarding the closure. SIP President Pierre Manigault and Martha Ramos suggested the decision may follow state pressure on journalists and advertisers, potentially compromising the outlet’s editorial independence. Expreso has maintained that recent institutional challenges, such as investigations by the Prosecutor’s Office, are linked to its editorial stance and investigative reporting on economic interests in Ecuador’s health and social security sectors.
