Reports of extortion and harassment targeting street vendors in Mérida have prompted calls for action from local officials. Following an incident in Ciudad Caucel where a vendor was allegedly pressured to pay weekly fees and faced a simulated business closure using non-official “caution” tape, Municipal President Cecilia Patrón Laviada urged citizens to report such crimes. She clarified that the perpetrators were not municipal staff and emphasized that legitimate inspectors must carry official identification. Local deputy Bayardo Ojeda Marrufo subsequently called for vendors to report similar allegations, including illegal charges and harassment reportedly linked to individuals using the designation ‘A. C. La Concordia’. A meeting was organized in Ciudad Caucel to gather testimonies and pursue legal protections for merchants. In a recent development, the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) detained a man identified as Luis Eduardo L. C., who is allegedly linked to the ‘La Concordia’ association. Investigations suggest that between May and July 2026, the suspect targeted a food stall in the Villa Jardín residential area, demanding weekly payments of 300 pesos in exchange for protection. The suspect reportedly threatened the vendor with the inability to continue working if payments were not made. During an initial hearing at the Mérida Justice Center regarding criminal case 588/2026, a judge ordered preventive detention for the suspect. The defense has requested a duplication of the constitutional term, meaning a final legal status regarding the indictment is expected to be determined on October 12. The defendant remains in preventive custody while the legal process continues.
