The Bollywood film industry has been targeted by a series of shootings and extortion threats. In mid-October, an audio message allegedly sent by attackers claimed that anyone working without their agreement or collaborating with actor Salman Khan would be killed. This followed a shooting in Mumbai targeting actor Tiger Shroff, which reportedly injured his driver. Other industry figures have been affected, including attacks on the residences of director Rohit Shetty and actress Disha Patani, as well as a reported demand for nearly 980,000 euros from actor Ranveer Singh. The threats have also extended to Canada, where a cafe owned by comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey was attacked three times. Perpetrators have claimed links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, though police have not confirmed the group’s involvement. In a specific recent incident, actor Tusshar Kapoor reportedly received a 5-crore rupee extortion threat from an individual claiming to be a member of the Bishnoi gang. Following investigations into these threats, investigations, Mumbai Police arrested 30-year-old Vaibhav Mishra, an IT engineer from Bengaluru. Mishra is accused of allegedly sending using Instagram and email to send threatening audio messages to several Bollywood celebrities, including Tusshar Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana, by impersonating members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. While the gang has reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting targeting Tiger Shroff, investigators believe Mishra may have been using the gang’s name to facilitate extortion attempts. Authorities are currently investigating whether artificial intelligence was used to mimic voices, though no forensic findings have confirmed the use of AI-generated audio. There is currently no evidence linking Mishra to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
