Milan has experienced extreme summer heat throughout August 2026. Early in the month, temperatures reached up to 37°C, with local measurements in central Milan recording daytime highs of approximately 40°C and nighttime lows near 28°C. These conditions followed recent severe hailstorms that caused vehicle damage. By mid-August, the situation was described as a “climate emergency” driven by the urban heat island effect and persistent North African anticyclones. The city recorded 31 consecutive tropical nights in July, with temperatures failing to drop below 21.1°C. In August, the heat intensified with average temperatures rising and nighttime minimums staying above 22.8°C, while daytime peaks approached 39°C. This period has also been marked by a significant decrease in precipitation. As of mid-August, the heat is being driven by subtropical anticyclones, such as the Caronte high-pressure system, which acts as a lid over the region. This is compounded by rising Mediterranean sea temperatures and dry soil that lacks moisture for evaporative cooling. The environmental crisis is impacting the economy; the mussel farming industry is at risk due to overheating seas, and livestock producers are facing thermal stress, which has led to up to a 10% reduction in milk production. Experts are calling for immediate adaptation strategies, including improved monitoring and financial support for affected agricultural sectors.
