In late July 2026, a powerful storm hit Greece, characterized by heavy rain, strong winds, and over 100,000 lightning strikes. The weather caused widespread flooding, power outages for tens of thousands of households, and damage to buildings and infrastructure across several regions, including Athens, Fthiotida, and Magnesia. In Fthiotida, streets were reported to have turned into rivers, and a tornado-like vortex was observed in the coastal area of Psaroudia. By mid-August, the Mani region experienced further severe flash flooding and extreme weather. On August 15, 2026, intense rainfall hit the East Mani region, with the National Observatory of Athens reporting that Kokkala recorded 141 mm of water in a short period, a volume described as “ten times the August average for the area,” with peak intensity reaching 245.2 mm/h. Some reports estimated up to 140 tons of water per stremma. This event caused significant destruction to homes, tourist accommodations, and the road network, including a 20-meter stretch in Alipa and sections in the Kokkala area. Bridges and roads were also blocked by debris and mud. Deputy Mayor Georgia Lyrofoni confirmed that several settlements, including Oitylo, Karavostasi, Alipa, Limeni, and Portokagio, suffered severe flooding as waters entered buildings. Local authorities noted the phenomenon was unprecedented for the region. The Fire Service reported receiving approximately 50 calls for assistance starting around 16:30, and rescue teams successfully evacuated 10 individuals trapped in their vehicles. Additionally, a woman was seriously injured by a lightning strike while inside her car in Oitylo; Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis confirmed she was transported to Sparta Hospital, noting that the National Health System remains on full alert.
