The Amazonas region of Brazil has experienced extreme weather patterns characterized by intense heat and severe storms. In mid-August, the municipality of Manicoré was struck by a severe hailstorm involving strong winds and thunderstorms, which produced 22.8 mm of rain in a single hour and caused structural damage in rural communities. This storm occurred alongside record-breaking temperatures across the state. By late August, Manaus recorded its highest temperature of the year at 37.1°C. This heatwave has coincided with a dry period and an increase in fire outbreaks. Experts suggest that the El Niño phenomenon may be intensifying these weather patterns by altering atmospheric circulation. Extreme heat continued through the end of August 2026. In Rio Branco, temperatures reached 37.1°C on August 30, surpassing the city’s previous 2026 record of 36.4°C. While the heat persisted, Rio Branco recorded 39 mm of rainfall, nearly reaching its historical monthly average of 40 mm. In Manaus, temperatures rose further to 37.4°C on August 31, setting a new high for the capital for the year and exceeding the previous peak of 37.1°C recorded on August 25. Meteorologists indicate that the El Niño phenomenon, involving the “abnormal warming of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean,” may be contributing to the intensification of these temperatures. Beyond the Amazon, the Distrito Federal has also seen its highest temperatures of the year, with some areas reaching 45°C and humidity levels dropping to 13%. In Acre, meteorological forecasts suggest a prolonged dry season through November, though a polar air mass is expected to arrive in early September, potentially providing a temporary drop in temperatures. New research published in Communications Earth & Environment indicates that extreme weather events are accelerating in the north-central Amazon Basin, an area previously considered less vulnerable.
