Eyelash extension health risks study

Research presented at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in London links frequent eyelash extension use to eye health complications and mite infestations.

A study led by Dr. Tetiana Zhmud of the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University surveyed 345 women aged 16 to 28. The findings indicate that regular use of extensions—specifically every three to four weeks—creates an environment where Demodex folliculorum mites can multiply by feeding on dead skin cells in dried lash glue. Microscopic examination of a subgroup revealed a high prevalence of these mites, appearing in 24 out of 25 samples tested. This can lead to demodicosis, characterized by itching, redness, swelling, and scaly skin.

Furthermore, the research highlighted a significant risk of meibomian gland dysfunction. Among women who had received extensions more than ten times, 85% showed signs of blocked glands or an inability to produce sufficient oil to prevent eye dryness. Experts recommend improved hygiene, such as regular eyelash cleaning, to mitigate these risks.
