The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted concluded a five-day safety audit of Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) between August 10 and on August 14, 2026. The inspection aimed to evaluate inspection, conducted as part of the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) program, evaluated Mexico’s compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards regarding licensing, airports, and navigation. AFAC, operating under Mexico's Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, stated that it addressed all auditor inquiries and provided the necessary technical evidence regarding operational safety processes and procedures. A final report is expected within 60 days. The audit follows a period where outcome of this evaluation is critical for Mexico regained Category 1 status in 2023 after a previous downgrade. A failure to maintain this rating could result its Category 1 aviation safety rating, which the country regained in 2023. While a downgrade to Category 2, which 2 would not suspend existing flights, it would restrict Mexican airlines airlines, such as Aeroméxico and Volaris, from expanding routes routes, increasing flight frequencies, or adding new aircraft to their United States operations. Following the conclusion of the five-day inspection, a final report is expected within 60 days. The regulatory Regulatory uncertainty surrounding the audit has already impacted the Mexican Stock Exchange, specifically causing a decline in the Exchange (BMV). The airport sector. sector saw notable volatility, with Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico dropping 7.61 percent during the week of the audit due to concerns regarding the aviation authority's regulatory standing.
