Family captivity case in Esquel

Overview

In October 2026, authorities in Esquel, Chubut, detained 71-year-old biochemist Miguel Edgardo Battista following allegations that he held his partner and three children captive in their home. The investigation was prompted by neighbors reporting suspicious behavior and extreme isolation starting around October 10.

A judicial raid conducted on October 22 led to the rescue of the family members, including three children aged 13, 17, and 19. While some reports suggested severe malnutrition, others noted that food supplies were present in the residence. The victims are currently receiving medical and psychological care.

Battista faces charges of aggravated abandonment of a person and unlawful deprivation of liberty. His defense attorney has claimed the isolation was a response to previous incidents of extortion and assault in Trevelin. Battista has been placed under ten days of preventive detention as prosecutors seek a psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental state.
