FAO and World Food Prize recognition of Latin American women
Overview
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Prize Foundation have recognized several Latin American women for their contributions to agroalimentary systems and rural development.
In Rome, the FAO honored Brazilian artisanal fishers Luena Maria Ferreira dos Santos and Joana Rodrigues Mousinho as part of a group of 100 ‘FAO Heroines in Agroalimentary Systems and Rural Development’. The recognition highlighted their work in defending traditional rights, food security, and social inclusion.
Further honors were extended to Eodora Méndez, a Lenca farmer from Honduras, who was named an FAO hero for her three decades of supporting small producers. Additionally, Josselyn Verónica Vega Rojas, a Kichwa Panzaleo indigenous leader from Ecuador, received the Top Agri-food Pioneers 2026 award from the World Food Prize Foundation in Iowa. Vega participated in discussions regarding climate change and systemic inequalities in food production.
