The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) convened major international forums in Rome to address global food security and sustainable agro-food systems. At the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum, twenty African nations prepared to present large-scale agricultural investment plans. This initiative seeks to transition farming from subsistence to productive sectors such as livestock, fisheries, and mechanization. FAO Assistant Director-General Abebe Haile-Gabriel noted that these governments are presenting “investment cases grounded in evidence and backed by political commitment” to combat poverty and hunger. During the subsequent World Food Forum, themed ‘Innovate today. Feed tomorrow’, international leaders discussed transforming food systems through science and innovation. Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, led a high-level delegation to promote the country’s model of food sovereignty and international cooperation. Rodríguez stated that while Venezuela previously achieved a ‘zero hunger’ goal, economic sanctions hindered progress, though she noted recent advancements toward reclaiming that objective. Other participants included leaders from Angola, Bolivia, and the Dominican Republic. Josefa Sacko, an Angolan candidate for FAO Director-General, advocated for placing the food challenges of the Global South at the center of international debate, noting that food security is intrinsically linked to social stability and peace. FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu expanded the forum's scope by emphasizing the critical role of youth and young women as leaders in transforming agrifood systems. He warned that without decisive action against climate change, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity, extreme weather events could push more than 132 million people into poverty by 2030. Discussions have since integrated the use of technology, including artificial intelligence and digital tools, to build more resilient food systems. In October 2026, the World Food Forum (WFF) reconvened in Rome under the theme “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”
