A series of fatal accidents and severe weather incidents have been reported across Greece, with Crete facing particularly extreme conditions. In Rethymno, a 53-year-old man died after his vehicle fell into a cliff, while other fatalities include a 65-year-old man killed by an uprooted tree and an 80-year-old livestock farmer who was swept away by floodwaters. Additionally, a 36-year-old man who died after falling into a poorly covered well in Pyrgos Monofatsiou. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued a Red Code alert for Crete, effective from Wednesday night through Sunday, October 4. Extreme rainfall has been recorded, with areas in Anogeia, Rethymno, seeing over 361 mm of rain within two days. Severe flooding has caused widespread damage in the Heraklion and Lasithi regions. The Drakouliaris river overflowed, turning roads into torrents and sweeping three vehicles into the sea in Gouves. In the Lasithi Plateau, the mayor reported total crop destruction, and a bridge in Mylopotamos collapsed. Emergency services have been heavily engaged, with the Fire Service receiving 255 calls. Authorities have conducted 17 evacuations and 38 water pumping operations. Due to the ongoing danger, schools in several municipalities, including Agios Nikolaos and Mylopotamos, have been closed. Residents in Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi remain under 112 emergency warnings to limit movement.
