Fatal accidents involving police officers in Europe

Recent reports indicate separate fatal incidents involving police officers in Spain and Italy.

In Alicante, Spain, a 38-year-old National Police officer died after being struck by his own patrol vehicle. Authorities are investigating whether mechanical failures or issues with the parking brake caused the vehicle to move unexpectedly.

In Italy, Antonio Villani, a 50-year-old Digos agent from the Avellino Police Headquarters, was killed in a road accident on the E45 highway near Borello, in the Cesena area. The incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon while Villani was providing a security escort for Avellino football fans traveling to a Serie B match against Cesena.

While initial reports suggested Villani was struck by a heavy truck while on foot in a service area, some accounts indicate an SUV may have lost control and crossed into the parking zone. Another police officer was injured in the collision and transported to Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where they are reported to be in stable condition. The accident caused significant traffic disruptions on the E45 heading north. The Highway Police and the Forlì Prosecutor's Office are conducting investigations to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the collision. The driver of the vehicle involved is currently under investigation for vehicular homicide.
