Authorities in Richmond, California, arrested 32-year-old Sergio Rivera-Vega in connection with a fatal house fire on the 200 block of 15th Street. The Investigators allege Rivera-Vega intentionally set the blaze at the residence where he lived with several relatives. The fire resulted in the deaths of four family members. The victims include Rivera-Vega’s 47-year-old father, Jose Rivera, who died at the scene, and his 33-year-old sister, Maria, who died from burn injuries. Her two young relatives, children, a 5-year-old nephew and a 2-year-old niece. Initial reports indicated niece, also succumbed to their injuries. Richmond Police Chief Timothy Simmons stated that detectives apprehended Rivera-Vega near the scene. The investigation noted suspicious circumstances, as a second fire broke out just two houses away while emergency crews responders were responding still attending to an unrelated fire nearby, they discovered the second blaze where four family members were found unconscious. Rivera-Vega, a relative who lived in the home, was apprehended near the scene. He initial blaze. Rivera-Vega faces charges including murder and arson. The children’s mother remains in critical condition. arson; if convicted, he faces life without parole. His arraignment has been delayed until September 8 to allow public defenders time to review the case. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by the family to assist with funeral and burial expenses.
