In Caserta, 62-year-old Guido Roviello, a man experiencing homelessness, died in a hospital following a brutal assault in Piazza Sant’Anna. The attack, which involved repeated punches and kicks to the head and chest, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a debt of approximately 50 euros. A 40-year-old Romanian national, who was also experiencing homelessness, was identified as the suspect. Following investigations by the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prosecutor’s office, the suspect was arrested by the Guardia di Finanza and has reportedly confessed to the assault. He faces charges of aggravated homicide for futile motives. The incident has drawn widespread local condemnation. condemnation and sparked significant outcry regarding public safety, urban decay, and the treatment of vulnerable populations. Surveillance footage and a video circulated on social media captured the violence. Religious leaders, including Bishop Pietro Lagnese, criticized the perceived indifference of bystanders, noting reports that some individuals filmed the violence on mobile phones instead of intervening to assist the victim. The Diocese has offered to ensure a dignified burial for Roviello.
