On October 8, two separate fatal incidents involving firearms were reported in Germany. In Tuttlingen, a 27-year-old man of Afghan nationality was killed by police in a town hall courtyard after he reportedly opened fire on arriving officers with a pistol. In Berngau, Bavaria, a routine weapons inspection conducted by Neumarkt district office employees turned deadly. The 60-year-old German suspect, described as a licensed hunter and sports shooter who legally owned ten firearms, subsequently barricaded himself inside a residential building, triggering a massive police operation involving armored vehicles, a police helicopter, and special forces (SEK). Following failed negotiations, special forces stormed the building in the early hours of Friday morning, around 2:20 AM, using explosives and gunfire. The suspect was shot and seriously injured during the arrest and remains under police guard in a hospital. Investigations revealed the 60-year-old had begun police training in Bavaria in 1988 but was dismissed before completing the program. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann stated the suspect had no prior criminal record or known extremist affiliations. In response to the Berngau shooting, the union ver. di has called for “enhanced protection and improved safety protocols for civil servants performing field duties.” duties,” emphasizing the need for better risk assessments and protective measures. While Minister Herrmann noted that approximately 60,000 firearms inspections are conducted annually in the state with minimal incident, investigations into the motive for this attack remain ongoing.
