The wave of high-severity road collisions that began in July 2022 continued through mid-2026, with July 2026 adding dozens of new incidents across the country. A week-long spate produced multiple fatal crashes in BR-158 (Cassilândia), BR-316 (Maranhão), Tocantins, Minas Gerais and Alagoas, as well as a teenager’s death in Mato Grosso. Police recorded further fatalities involving cyclists in Bahia, pedestrians in Espírito Santo, and elderly victims struck by trucks in Goiás and Pará. Drunk-driving remained a prominent factor: arrests were made after a gate-ramming in Goiás, a collision in Vitória, a fatal crash in Osasco, and a chase-related death in São Paulo. In late July 2026, fatalities continued, including a law student killed on the BR-174 in Mato Grosso following a head-on collision with an SUV, and a motorcyclist in São Paulo who required a leg amputation. Weekend collisions resulted in a mother and daughter being killed on the Anhanguera highway, and a motorcyclist being struck by a police vehicle during a pursuit in Guarulhos. In Santos, a motorcyclist struck two elderly pedestrians, causing injuries to all three. In mid-August 2026, a major multi-vehicle collision on the BR-277 in Morretes, Paraná, killed two people and injured five. Investigations by the Federal Highway Police revealed the truck driver had “intentionally tampered with the vehicle’s braking system” by isolating brake hoses, leading to a total loss of braking power. On August 18, a catastrophic head-on collision occurred on the BR-373 highway in Ipiranga, Paraná, when a truck crossed into the opposite lane and struck a municipal health department minibus. The accident, which was transporting patients and companions from Imbituva to the Curitiba metropolitan area, killed 23 people, including 21 adults and two children. The truck driver also died in the crash.
