Fatal hiking accident in the Italian Dolomites
Overview
Michelle Alejandra Rubio-Leiva, a 36-year-old communications professional and digital nomad living in Rome, died after falling approximately 300 meters in the Italian Dolomites. The accident occurred on October 17 near the Forcella Pordoi trail in the Sella group while she was hiking with her family at an altitude of about 2,750 meters.
Reports indicate that Rubio-Leiva had stepped away from the marked, safe hiking path to reach a steep, exposed ledge to capture a panoramic photograph. She reportedly lost her footing on unstable terrain and plunged into the canyon.
The Trentino Alpine and Cave Rescue Services deployed specialists and a rescue helicopter to the site. Although rescuers reached the location, Rubio-Leiva was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family members were airlifted to the nearby town of Canazei. Authorities noted that the area is characterized by steep inclines, loose gravel, and falling rocks, adding to a year in which Italian Alpine Rescue reported more than 80 deaths in the Dolomites.
