Fatal hit-and-run of runner in Samborondón

Overview

On September 4, 2026, Mónica Andrea Martinich Cohn, a 38-year-old runner from Guayaquil, died after being struck by a vehicle while training on the road to Samborondón, Ecuador. Preliminary reports indicate a pickup truck attempted to overtake a group of athletes by passing on the right side, striking Martinich near kilometer 3 of the La Puntilla route. The driver fled the scene immediately following the impact.

Local authorities, including the Samborondón Transit and Surveillance Authority, have provided surveillance footage to assist in the investigation. As of September 9, authorities are continuing efforts to locate the driver of the RAM pickup truck involved in the hit-and-run accident.
