Fatal iPhone fraud investigation in Dominican Republic

Overview

Authorities in the Dominican Republic are investigating a fraudulent iPhone sale that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Emmanuel Contreras Medina. The incident occurred in July 2026 in the Los Praditos sector after Contreras transferred RD$15,000 to Joan Manuel Jiménez Medina, also known as ‘Ángel’, for an iPhone 15 Pro Max advertised on Facebook Marketplace.

Investigations indicate that Jiménez Medina allegedly impersonated the legitimate owner of the device to deceive the victim. A confrontation took place at the La Javilla baseball stadium during the transaction. During the encounter, the actual owner of the phone, Lenin Jhericop Núñez de León, allegedly struck Contreras multiple times with a baseball bat. Contreras remained in critical condition for nearly two months before passing away on September 9, 2026.

Following his surrender in Neiba, a court in the Distrito Nacional ordered three months of preventive detention for Jiménez Medina. He has been sent to the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Center, with a mandatory review of his detention scheduled for January 19, 2027.
