A Polish pilgrim bus overturned on the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes, Hungary, during the night of August 15-16, 2026, resulting in 12 deaths and numerous injuries. The vehicle, operated by the company ‘Michael’, was transporting 59 people returning from a pilgrimage in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, toward Poland. Preliminary findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the bus to veer off the road and into a ditch. Medical repatriation efforts have concluded following a four-week joint Polish-Hungarian humanitarian and medical task force. The final injured person from the incident was recently transported to a hospital in Warsaw, marking the end of the large-scale evacuation process. Legal proceedings are advancing against the 62-year-old Polish driver, Robert M., who faces charges of causing a fatal road accident through negligence. According to the District Prosecutor's Office in Krosno, the driver has refused to provide explanations during the investigation. While the driver was present during recent court proceedings, he declined to testify. A Hungarian court has extended his temporary arrest until December 18, a decision that remains subject to appeal. The investigation is ongoing, with Hungarian investigative materials being continuously translated for Polish prosecutors. Earlier investigations noted a second driver was on board, resting in a soundproofed area at the time of the crash. Additionally, the Krosno Prosecutor's Office has prepared a request for the Polish Minister of Justice and the Prosecutor General to assume leadership of the investigation, citing that the driver and all victims are Polish citizens.
