Fatal shooting of Culver CityBus driver

On October 1, 2026, Culver CityBus driver Bruce Rodriguez was fatally shot in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the shooting followed an altercation between Rodriguez and an allegedly intoxicated passenger, Jose Zayas, regarding a missed stop or a wrong turn. Zayas reportedly pulled a handgun from a bag and opened fire.

Zayas was arrested the following day by the LAPD with assistance from an FBI task force. He was subsequently charged with murder with special circumstance allegations, including the murder of transportation personnel and the use of a firearm, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors allege that Zayas shot Rodriguez several times after traffic conditions prevented the driver from stopping immediately to let him off, before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.

In the wake of the incident, Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza announced a temporary suspension of bus services to support staff. Local officials, including Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, described the killing as a “senseless and brutal act.” A memorial service was held in Culver City to honor Rodriguez, a 12-year transit veteran.
