On October 3, 2026, a seven-year-old Venezuelan girl, Edimari Hernandez Chacon, was fatally stabbed while walking with her family in the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago. Police reported that an adult woman approached the child on South Cottage Grove Avenue and stabbed her multiple times in the back with a sharp object. Bystanders intervened at the scene, chasing and detaining the suspect until law enforcement arrived. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Shavon D. Gayden, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation with witnesses. Following the incident, Gayden was taken into custody and is facing charges of first-degree murder. Authorities noted that the victim and the suspect were strangers and that a motive for the unprovoked attack had not yet been established. A By October 6, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office had formally filed the first-degree murder charge. While a court hearing for Gayden appearance was scheduled initially anticipated for October 7. 7, the proceedings were delayed because Gayden required continued hospitalization following the incident.
