Overview
On October 6, a fatal collision occurred on SE Evangeline Thruway near the intersection of E. Verot School Road in Lafayette.
Authorities identified the victim as 50-year-old Mark Hayes, who was operating a gas-powered bicycle. Preliminary investigations indicate that after a vehicle ahead of him stopped for a red light, Hayes moved onto the shoulder, disregarded the red light, and entered the intersection. He then struck a trailer being towed by a pickup truck that was making a left turn.
The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured and showed no signs of impairment. While the investigation remains ongoing, no citations or charges have been announced. The roadway was temporarily closed for the incident but reopened by 2:40 p.m.
