On September 18, 2026, a head-on collision occurred on the BR-163 highway in Itaquiraí, Mato Grosso do Sul, involving a passenger vehicle and a van owned by the Eldorado Municipal Health Secretariat. The van was transporting eight patients back to Eldorado following medical appointments in Dourados. The death toll is five. The deceased include municipal employees Odair Torres and Edimárcia Oliveira, as well as Jildson Vera Martins and Edimilson Lopes, who died at the scene. A fourth victim, Silvana Alves de Oliveira, later died in the hospital. Reports indicate that several of the victims were residents of indigenous communities. At least seven other individuals sustained injuries, with several reported to be in serious condition. Emergency responders from the Fire Department, Federal Highway Police, and the Motiva Pantanal concessionaire attended the scene. While the highway experienced significant congestion and temporary closures during rescue operations, it was fully reopened later on the evening of the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the causes of the collision.
