The Sanctuary of Fatima ~~prepared for~~ hosted the 11th ‘Bênção dos Capacetes’ (Blessing of Helmets) pilgrimage, an event ~~intended~~ designed to promote road safety and prayer for those lost on the roads. This year’s ceremony, presided over by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Valério, expanded to include simultaneous celebrations in the Azores and Madeira ~~archipelagos.~~ archipelagos to accommodate island riders. The event drew approximately 170,000 motorcyclists from Portugal and abroad, including participants from Spain, France, and Germany. During the ceremony, Patriarch Rui Valério emphasized the importance of road responsibility and prudence, stating that “responsible driving is a way to love one’s neighbor.” A message from Pope Leo XIV was also read, encouraging motorcyclists to promote a culture of care and road safety through fraternity and caution. As the pilgrimage took place, a serious collision occurred on the EN 226 road in Leomil, Moimenta da Beira. The accident involved three motorcycles and a light goods vehicle, resulting in three motorcyclists being critically injured. Emergency responders, including 27 personnel and an INEM helicopter, attended the scene to transport the injured to hospitals in Vila Real and Viseu. The road was closed to traffic to facilitate assistance.
