FBI data breach investigation
Overview
A massive data breach targeting the FBI has been linked to the hacking group ShinyHunters and members of the cybercrime group Hellcat. The FBI is reportedly operating under the assumption that the stolen data includes information pertaining to all its employees.
Saif al-Din Khader, a 17-year-old known by the nickname ‘Rey,’ was taken into custody in Jordan on September 29 and is reportedly cooperating with the FBI’s investigation. Adem El Adeb, a 19-year-old associate of Khader and fellow Hellcat member, claims he repeatedly warned Khader that targeting the bureau was ‘suicidal’ and ‘crazy,’ noting it would bring the full weight of the US government upon him.
Both individuals were identified as members of Hellcat, a group previously linked to high-profile hacks such as an incident involving France’s Schneider Electric. The Israeli cybersecurity firm Kela also identified the suspects as members of the group.
