FBI-led World Cup security threats

Entities: Lionel Messi · Princess Leonor of Spain · West Drift Manhattan hotel · Federal Bureau of Investigation · Spain national football team

Overview

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, the FBI’s International Police Cooperation Center (IPCC) coordinated federal agencies and foreign police to monitor and respond to a series of security threats.

On August 6 the IPCC protected the Spanish delegation, investigated a suicide‑bomb threat aimed at the Spain‑Portugal match in Dallas, and cleared a bomb threat at a Los Angeles hotel before Spain’s quarter‑final. The same day threats were reported against high‑profile players. Callers claimed to carry homemade bombs and an AR‑15 to the Dallas stadium targeting Lionel Messi, and a social‑media post warned of bombs at the Atlanta venue. Explosive sweeps were conducted, and separate suspects were detained in Houston and arrested in Toronto for attempts to approach Cristiano Ronaldo.

On August 7 the focus shifted to additional threats against Messi. A caller at Dallas airport before the Argentina‑Jordan match said he and two accomplices were heading to the stadium with bombs and an AR‑15. A separate X post before the Argentina‑Egypt match in Atlanta threatened to “blow up Messi with four bombs.” FBI explosive‑safety specialists and K‑9 units searched the Atlanta stadium and later investigated three suspected bombs placed in trash cans. French referee François Letexier also received roughly 6,000 threatening WhatsApp messages. All threats were investigated and neutralized; no attacks occurred.
