FBI repatriation of looted Egyptian artifacts

Overview

The FBI Los Angeles Field Office repatriated 48 looted Egyptian cultural artifacts to representatives of the Egyptian government. The items, which include carved figurines, amulets, and tomb equipment from the Pharaonic, Roman, and Coptic periods, were returned during a ceremony attended by Egyptian Consul General Dr. Hossam Eldeen Aly.

The recovery followed an investigation into illegal trafficking. While a suspected trafficker is deceased, the investigation remains open as officials seek to identify co-conspirators and locate further stolen items. It was noted that the individual most recently in possession of the objects contacted the FBI after discovering their questionable origins. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed there were no legal records for the removal of these items from Egypt.

The repatriation was supported by the U.S. Department of State and the FBI’s legal attaché in Cairo. The recovered objects are expected to be displayed in Egyptian museums for research and public viewing.
