FC Barcelona has moved toward economic normalcy by regaining access to the ‘1:1 rule’ under new financial regulations. This shift allows the club to reinvest all generated income directly into transfers. Initially, the club regained a spending margin of approximately €69.5m through strategic sales and revised accounting methods regarding player departures and amortisation. Following this stabilization, the club has engaged in significant transfer market activity to support manager Hansi Flick’s sporting project. Notable acquisitions include Anthony Gordon for approximately €70 million plus variables, Karim Adeyemi for €22 million, and midfielder Rodri for €60 million plus variables, alongside the permanent signing of Cancelo. The club has since achieved a massive turnaround in its La Liga squad cost limit. Moving from a negative spending ceiling of -€144m in the 2021-22 season, the club is projected to reach a limit of €582.7m for the 2026-27 season, representing a total swing of approximately €727m. This progress narrows the gap with Real Madrid, which maintains a limit of €832.7m. Recent market activity reflects this recovery, with the club spending approximately €184 million in the latest transfer window—its highest investment since 2019. This shift signals a transition from emergency cost-cutting and registration difficulties toward more stable operations within La Liga regulations. Despite this improved standing, recruitment in central defense remains characterized by low expenditure. Since Joan Laporta’s 2021 return to the presidency, Jules Koundé is the only central defender for whom the club has paid a transfer fee. Other defenders, such as Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Iñigo Martínez, joined as free agents. Currently, the club faces defensive depth challenges due to injuries to Christensen and Garcia, leaving Flick with limited options in that role.
