FDA authorization of Aletta robotic blood draw device
Overview
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted De Novo authorization to Aletta, an autonomous robotic system developed by the Dutch company Vitestro for performing blood draws on adult patients in outpatient settings. The device is designed to address shortages of trained phlebotomists and nursing staff.
Aletta uses near-infrared light and Doppler ultrasound to identify suitable veins while distinguishing them from arteries. If the system cannot identify a safe vein, it will not attempt the procedure. Once a target is located, the robot autonomously manages the application of a tourniquet, skin preparation, needle insertion, tube changes, and bandaging. Clinical data indicates the robot is at least as efficient as a human operator, with success rates comparable to or exceeding those of professional technicians across diverse patient populations and skin tones.
While the system operates autonomously, it requires supervision by a trained healthcare professional. A single phlebotomist or nurse is permitted to oversee up to three Aletta devices simultaneously, with responsibilities including initiating the session, monitoring the process, and verifying that collection tubes are filled correctly.
Following the authorization, labor organizations such as UGL Salute have cautioned that robotics should serve as a “support tool rather than a replacement for healthcare professionals.”
Despite the regulatory milestone, Aletta will not be immediately available to U.S. patients. Vitestro plans to deploy the technology in Europe first and intends to conduct multicenter clinical trials in the United States to validate performance in American clinical settings before a full commercial launch.
