In the October 2026 runoff election, Celina Leão (PP) was elected as the first woman to be directly elected to lead the Distrito Federal. With over 90% of the votes counted, Leão secured approximately 57% of the valid votes, defeating Leandro Grass (PT), who received roughly 43%. Following the results, Grass contacted Leão and her vice-governor, Gustavo Rocha (Republicanos), to congratulate them and emphasize the importance of democracy. Following the election, newly elected District Deputy Keka Bagno (PSOL) commented on the historical significance of Leão’s victory, noting the importance of a woman governing the capital for the first time. Bagno stated her mandate in the Legislative Chamber of the DF (CLDF) will prioritize the defense of women’s rights and pledged opposition to any initiatives representing a regression in rights.
