Fehmarn Belt tunnel construction and rail expansion

Overview

Construction of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel, an 18-km infrastructure project connecting Germany and Denmark, has reached several key milestones. In early August 2026, the third of 89 pre-fabricated concrete segments, named ‘Heiligenhafen’, was successfully lowered onto the seabed. While the project aims to facilitate rapid road and electrified rail transit between the two nations, completion is now expected after 2030, missing the original 2029 target.

Following the progress on the tunnel itself, planning approval was issued for the expansion of the rail hinterland connection in the Lübeck area. This expansion is intended to strengthen the Hamburg-Copenhagen connection by improving freight transport and reducing travel times. Main construction for these rail connections is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the project including noise protection and compensation measures for local residents and businesses.
