Feline parvovirus outbreak in Germany

In Duisburg, pathology results confirmed that the pathogen is parvovirus, a highly contagious and often fatal disease. The outbreak at the Duisburg animal shelter resulted in the deaths of ten cats and required several others to receive intensive care at the Asterlagen veterinary clinic.

To contain the spread, the Duisburg facility implemented a temporary ban on new cat admissions starting August 22. Shelter director Lutz Kaczmarsch stated that the specific strain affects cats and poses no danger to dogs or other animals, noting that the situation might have been more severe had the outbreak not been identified promptly.
