Greece has recorded 11 femicides during the first nine months of 2026, including a recent case involving a 25-year-old biologist in Igoumenitsa. Other recent incidents of violence include an attempted femicide in Kalamata and a 40-hour hostage situation in Nikaia. Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Elena Rapti reported a surge in domestic violence complaints. The SOS helpline (15900) received 7,162 calls in the first nine months of 2026, a figure that has already surpassed the total recorded for 2025. To assist victims, the ministry provides access to 47 counseling centers offering psychological and vocational support, alongside emergency accommodation through local partnerships. Recent incidents have highlighted what critics describe as systemic failures within the nation’s security forces. While the Ministry of Citizen Protection has distributed over 5,000 digital panic buttons, implementation remains heavily concentrated in Athens and Thessaloniki. Despite a nationwide expansion of this measure in May 2024, access in rural areas remains limited due to staffing shortages and a lack of information. Critics further note that regional police stations are often understaffed and officers may lack sufficient training to assess risks. These developments have intensified calls for Greece to recognize femicide as a distinct criminal offense, aligning with a movement to address the systemic nature of gender-based violence. This follows previous advocacy from Giorgos Kalliamanis, Honorary President of the Association of Police Employees, who suggested shifting focus toward stricter monitoring of perpetrators. On a global scale, the World Health Organization has characterized gender-based violence as an epidemic, with UN data indicating that over 50,000 women and girls have been murdered in non-conflict settings by partners or family members since the start of 2024. epidemic.
