Reports from Venezuela indicate separate incidents of femicide involving domestic partners in different states. In La Guaira, police commissioner Elías Fariñas was taken into custody following the shooting death of his former partner, Johana Naranjo Yedra. The victim had reportedly suffered a history of physical and psychological abuse. In Portuguesa, authorities arrested 26-year-old José Antonio Cabriza Piña for the alleged killing of 29-year-old Deilymar Carolina Gil Aguilar. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, in the El Filito sector of Barro Negro. According to witness testimony from the victim’s 12-year-old daughter, a heated argument took place inside the residence, after which the daughter heard screams and physical impacts. The victim’s body was later discovered in a brush area near the home. An autopsy conducted by the National Service of Forensic Sciences (Senamecf) determined the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia due to strangulation. The suspect remains in custody under the jurisdiction of the Public Ministry. Local rights organizations noted this was the third femicide recorded in Portuguesa within a two-month period. period, prompting calls for increased prevention of gender-based violence.
