Reports regarding a new track-focused Ferrari 296 model have fluctuated between two distinct technical directions. Initial rumors suggested the development of a ‘296 Challenge Stradale’ that might abandon hybrid technology entirely to reduce weight by approximately 170kg using a pure 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine producing roughly 720 horsepower. Following the unveiling of the 296 GTB—a plug-in hybrid sports car producing 830 hp—Ferrari has officially introduced the 296 GT Modificata. Revealed at the Ferrari Racing Days at the Hungaroring in Budapest, this track-only, limited-production two-seater is designed exclusively for the non-competitive Club Competizioni GT program, succeeding the 488 GT Modificata. Derived from the 296 GT3 Evo, the Modificata features a 2,992cc 120-degree twin-turbo V6 engine producing 730 cv and incorporates technology from the 499P hypercar. By bypassing ‘Balance of Performance’ racing regulations, the Modificata achieves a performance boost, with Ferrari estimating it can lap the Fiorano circuit up to three seconds faster than the 296 GT3 Evo. Technical upgrades include a six-speed sequential gearbox, a slotted splitter, and a redesigned rear wing with 499P-inspired endplates. Recent developments suggest a road-going version of the 296 Challenge is also in progress. Spy shots from Germany have identified a prototype, referred to as the 296 Challenge Stradale, undergoing aerodynamic testing. The test vehicle utilized neon-yellow Flow-Viz paint, a technique used in Formula 1, and featured red camouflage. Visible design elements include larger front air intakes, stacked side flaps behind the bumper, and exposed side skirts similar to the racing variant. The inclusion of parking sensors indicates this model is being developed for road use, following the success of the 296 range and its 880-horsepower 296 Speciale.
