Google and Fervo Energy entered a record-breaking power purchase agreement for the Cape Station project in Utah. Under this deal, Fervo Energy is set to supply 396 megawatts of electricity starting in 2028, with an option for Google to increase purchases to nearly 1 gigawatt by mid-2030. The project utilizes enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) to provide scalable, carbon-free electricity. Following the initial agreement, the Cape Station project achieved a milestone by generating its first power, marking the first time a utility-scale enhanced geothermal system has reached this stage. While Fervo Energy has faced recent fluctuations in share price and a quarterly earnings miss, several analysts have upgraded the company to ratings such as ‘strong-buy’ and ‘outperform,’ citing growth potential driven by the electricity demands of artificial intelligence data centers. In September 2026, Fervo Energy successfully exported its first power to the grid from a 33-megawatt block at the Cape Station development in Beaver County, Utah. This project represents the world’s first next-generation geothermal power plant operating at a commercial scale using EGS. The first block entered a testing phase on September 24, with commercial operations scheduled to begin on October 1, at which point electricity will be supplied to Shell Energy. Two additional blocks are expected to be completed by January 1, 2027, bringing the total Phase I capacity to approximately 100 megawatts. Beyond its partnership with Google, Fervo has secured a 15-year contract to supply 320 megawatts to Southern California Edison. The technology utilizes methods adapted from the oil and gas industry, involving drilling parallel wells approximately 8,000 feet below the surface to facilitate heat exchange. As the Cape Station development expands, it is projected to reach a peak capacity of 4.3 gigawatts.
