FIA policy changes for Russian and Belarusian motorsport

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has lifted restrictions on motorsport competitors from Russia and Belarus. Following a decision by the World Motor Sport Council, participants from these nations are no longer required to compete under a neutral flag or commit to political neutrality. Competitors are now permitted to display national colors, flags, and symbols on equipment and uniforms, and national anthems may be played on podiums. While the FIA maintains its ban on hosting international or regional motorsport events within Russian and Belarusian territory, the decision has faced significant opposition. The Automobile Federation of Ukraine (FAU) and the Ukrainian government have urged the FIA to reverse the policy. Ukrainian Minister of Youth and Sports Matvii Bidnyi criticized the move, stating it allows for ‘sportswashing’ and the ‘normalisation of aggression’ in international sports. In response to the policy change, response, the FAU has escalated its legal challenges. The federation filed a formal complaint with the FIA Ethics Committee. FAU President Oleksandr Feldman alleges Committee, alleging that the Russian Automobile Federation (RAF) is in breach of FIA statutes by operating offices in occupied Ukrainian territories, including Crimea, Sevastopol, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia.
