On 23 July 2026 the EU added Russian chess official Arkady Dvorkovich to a sanctions list, ~~leading~~ prompting him to suspend his powers as FIDE president. Deputy president Viswanathan Anand of India was appointed interim president under the FIDE Charter, a step confirmed by the FIDE Council to ensure continuity. The federation scheduled a presidential election for the General Assembly at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 26‑27 September 2026. Two days later Anand reiterated his interim role and ~~indicated~~ hinted at a possible partnership with Kazakh billionaire Timur Turlov for the upcoming vote. On 27 July 2026 Turlov, CEO of Freedom Holding Corp and president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, ~~officially~~ announced his ~~candidacy. He campaigned~~ candidacy, campaigning on digitalisation, AI tools, school‑chess programmes and financial sustainability for national federations. On 29 July 2026 Turlov formally launched his bid, outlining a unified digital player platform modelled on Kazakhstan’s KazChess ID system, expanded AI‑driven tools, and a push for school‑age chess worldwide. He highlighted more than $75 million already invested in Kazakh chess development and suggested former world champion Viswanathan Anand could serve as vice‑president on his ticket. The election will decide who steers FIDE after Dvorkovich steps down, with Anand remaining interim president until a successor is chosen.
