FIFA commercial rights controversy

In late July 2026 FIFA announced a new commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling a 20 % minority stake in World Cup and other tournament rights. The plan, valued at roughly $20 billion and backed by investor fund Thrive Eternal, JPMorgan and Joshua Kushner, was swiftly condemned by UEFA’s 55 member associations, CONCACAF and political figures such as UK Labour leader Andy Burnham. UEFA issued a legal warning demanding preservation of all related documents.

Under that pressure Infantino withdrew the proposal, prompting calls for a leadership challenge. On 2 August 2026 FIFA formally announced it would not proceed with the stake sale, citing the unified opposition of UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF. The reversal came within 72 hours of the leak and was accompanied by internal dissent, including the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro and questions from chief operating officer Kevin Lamour about the process.

Later on 2 August, UEFA and its 55 member associations voted to boycott all FIFA competitions, stating they “unanimously and unequivocally reject” the private‑investment scheme. The proposal had envisaged a $200 billion subsidiary and funding packages of $100 billion (or a reduced $27 billion) for member associations. Former FIFA vice‑chair Jim Boyce called the plan “absurd,” and the boycott intensified pressure on Infantino’s re‑election bid.
