Following this, the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) rejected claims that the industry was attempting to sabotage the tax, clarifying that its opposition focuses on consumer fairness for those who booked and paid for trips before the tax was announced.

In a recent development, TAANZ welcomed a decision by the Fijian Government regarding the tax application. The TST will only apply to new bookings made on or after 1 September 2026, a move intended to provide certainty for New Zealand travelers who have already booked and paid for holidays prior to that date.
