After terminating his five-year contract with Hajduk Split by mutual agreement, Croatian midfielder Filip Krovinović signed a deal with Brazilian Serie A club Grêmio that runs until the end of 2028. The move reunites Krovinović with former coach Luis Castro and brings his salary to roughly R$ 400,000. As of mid-August 2026, Krovinović has been officially cleared to play following the granting of his work visa and the processing of his registration by the CBF. Grêmio has also finalized the arrival of defensive midfielder Danilo Barbosa from Al Ula in Saudi Arabia, who is also cleared to play through December 2028. On August 23, 2026, Grêmio suffered a 1-0 defeat against Red Bull Bragantino in the Campeonato Brasileiro at the Estádio Cícero de Souza Marques. The lone goal was a 49th-minute header by defender Gustavo Marques following a corner kick. The match was characterized by significant officiating controversy; a goal by Bragantino’s Herrera was disallowed by VAR after officials determined the ball had not fully crossed the line, while Grêmio also saw two of its own goals ruled out. Additionally, two members of Grêmio's technical staff were sent off during the game. Following the loss, Grêmio remains in 15th place with 25 points, continuing to face pressure regarding the relegation zone. Grêmio’s management and coach Luís Castro expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating, while player Villasanti expressed frustration over conceding the goal. Coach Castro also criticized “personal attacks against football professionals.” The defeat has increased pressure on Castro, with reports suggesting his future at the club may depend on the results of the next three matches. Executive director Paulo Pelaipe announced intentions to file an official complaint with the CBF. The club will now shift its focus to an upcoming Copa do Brasil quarter-final match against Internacional.
