Financial barriers to cancer treatment in Australia

Research from the Leukaemia Foundation has highlighted the significant financial barriers faced by blood cancer patients in Australia. Initial findings indicated that one in eight patients has been forced to delay, skip, or cancel treatment due to costs including medical fees, medications, travel, and accommodation. The foundation noted that while average direct annual costs are approximately 3,910 Australian dollars, some families face burdens exceeding 20,000 dollars per year, often compounded by lost income.

Subsequent reporting by the foundation introduced the concept of a ‘postcode penalty,’ describing the disproportionate financial burden on regional patients who must travel to major cities for specialist care. A national scorecard released by the foundation ranked states based on the adequacy of subsidies for these expenses. South Australia was ranked highest for its ability to help patients recoup approximately 70 per cent of accommodation costs, while Victoria ranked lowest, with accommodation subsidies covering an estimated 28 per cent of costs and car travel subsidies falling below real-world expenses.
