Authorities in North Macedonia have initiated several criminal investigations involving significant financial misconduct. In mid October, the Ministry of Internal Affairs filed charges against nine individuals and one legal entity concerning procurement fraud within the Administration for Hydrometeorological Services. The acting director is accused of manipulating procedures to provide unlawful benefits to two companies, totaling approximately 487,715 euros. Investigators allege the director bypassed ethical codes by using altered specifications and bypassing technical requirements. By late October, the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bitola filed charges against a Macedonian citizen and an Estonian national for a large-scale cryptocurrency fraud. The suspects allegedly used a mobile application to promise non-existent profits, inducing hundreds of citizens to invest in a fake platform between December 2025 and April 2026. On October 30, the Sector for Computer Crime and Digital Forensics provided further details regarding the cryptocurrency scam. The charges involve a 56-year-old woman from Bitola and a 38-year-old man from Estonia. While only five formal complaints have been filed, financial analysis of the primary suspect’s bank account suggests many more victims were affected. The investigation, which involved domestic and international cooperation, included the seizure of electronic devices and forensic analysis of cryptocurrency transactions to identify the owner of the crypto wallet.
