Financial fraud investigations in Nigeria
Overview
Nigerian authorities have initiated several investigations and legal proceedings targeting various forms of financial crime. In Lagos, a banker and seven others were arraigned in the Federal High Court on charges related to an alleged ₦710 million fraud. The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) claims the defendants diverted funds from accounts under Post-No-Debit restrictions by using stolen personal identification to open new accounts for concealment.
In separate incidents, police in Delta State arrested three individuals for an appointment scam. The suspects allegedly used caller-identification technology to impersonate high-ranking government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, to defraud victims. Additionally, in Cross River State, an individual was apprehended for allegedly stealing bank customers’ PINs at ATM locations in Calabar to facilitate unauthorized withdrawals.
