Diesel prices in Finland have surged to levels described as unsustainable for the transport sector. By early September 2026, prices in certain areas exceeded 2.5 euros per liter, prompting SKAL CEO Anssi Kujala to state that the industry has reached a “breaking point.” Consequently, two-thirds of transport companies have been forced to renegotiate customer contracts to manage rising energy costs. By mid-September, data from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin indicated that Finland recorded the highest diesel prices in Europe, with costs ranging between approximately €2.43 and €2.48 per liter. These prices significantly exceed the EU average and are notably higher than in neighboring Sweden, where diesel is roughly €0.57 cheaper per liter. As of late September, prices have climbed further, reaching 2.9 euros per liter in northern regions and averaging 2.5 euros in Helsinki. In response, citizens and the transport industry are organizing a consumer boycott of gas stations titled ‘Don’t Refuel’ (Nie tankuj), scheduled for early October. The political response remains divided. The opposition Centre Party (KESK) has called on Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to convene an extraordinary government session, arguing that workers can no longer afford to commute. However, Finance Minister Riikka Purra has stated that tax or fee reductions are not feasible due to public finance challenges and Finland’s status under an excessive deficit procedure by the European Commission. While geopolitical tensions and the closure of the Russian market contribute to costs, reports suggest taxation remains a primary driver of these record prices. By early October, business organizations have intensified calls for government intervention. A survey by the Central Chamber of Commerce indicates that approximately 30 percent of companies report increased logistics costs have significantly weakened their competitiveness, with manufacturing and trade being most affected.
